I’m not much of a dancer. I used to be, although I’m way out of practice. But I was intrigued to try Majesco’s Zumba Fitness title for PS3 and Xbox 360.

The idea, basically, is to bring the Zumba class at the local gym to your home. No spandex. No embarrassment because you can’t do all the moves or because you don’t look like the people on your left or right. And, I mean, have you been to a Zumba class lately? It’s like falling into a 1980s episode of “Soul Train” or “American Bandstand” – everybody looks good and everybody can keep on the beat.

My beautiful wife, Whitni, who is a Zumba enthusiast, and who I’m proud to say looks the part, too, helped me review the game.

We quickly decided we liked the 360 version better. It uses the Kinect camera, which tracks your entire body’s movements. The PlayStation version used a belt to track movements via Sony’s Move camera and controller. The belt was fine, but to just stand there and go via Xbox 360/Kinect is much more realistic.

From there, it’s simple.

A virtual “you” is placed on screen with other dancers and you start doing the moves, essentially Latin dance moves. The music is good and, thank goodness, there are skill levels. Wifey could go as high as she wanted. I needed to keep the training wheels on.

No matter how tough you make it, this title will get you moving, get you sweaty and get you burning some calories pretty quickly. Watching my own screen self, as compared to the other dancers, well, I would be first man voted off this virtual “Dancing With The Stars,” but who cares?

The beauty of this is that no one is watching and you can do it at any time. You don’t have to get in the car to drive to the Y. And if you get really, really good, you can jump in real Zumba classes and not look too clumsy at all.
